Ring Alarm Triggers

I'm able to control my ring alarm devices with routines via actions, but using the ring alarm as a trigger for a routine doesn't appear to work.

What I'm trying to do is this:

I have a few light switches connected to the Ring Alarm base station, but Ring only supports manually toggling them. I can toggle them via routines in SC though. What I'd like to do is based on some Ring Alarm event (Alarm Disarmed), turn on the lights. I can't seem to get the Ring trigger to work though. I enabled it with SMS notification and don't receive anything for any Ring trigger.

    Hello everyone,

Good news! We have identified the source of the issue and made a fix! Please log out and log back in to get the updates to your app. Let me know if you still experience any issues with Ring triggers.

    Best,

    John

  • Hi Bill,

Thanks for reaching out! Hopefully this is an easy fix. Can you walk me through what exact steps you take to create your Ring Trigger(s)?

    Best,

    John

  • Sure. Starting from an empty routine in the web interface (same process for the app):

    Click "Add Actions to Routine"

Select a light controlled by Ring

    Select On

Select "No" for no delayed off command

    Click "Add Triggers to Routine"

    Select "Ring"

    Select "Alarm Disarm"

    Click Next

    Click Save (without additional notifications)

Executing the routine manually turns the light on, but disarming the Ring Alarm does not.

    Thanks!

  • It looks like the triggers are working now. I didn't change anything, so either it just took a bit of time, or you fixed something.

    Either way, thanks!

  • Perhaps I spoke to soon. It appears to not be working now. The issue seems intermittent.

  • Hi Bill,

Thanks for following up. Can you think of anything that you did differently between the times it worked for you and times it didn’t. Any information will help the developers get to the bottom of the issue!

  • I can't think of anything. Same process. Just disarming the alarm from the Ring app (either from home or away mode). It was working yesterday, but doesn't work today.

  • I have the same issue with ring. Was working and stopped today.

  • Working again this morning. Any idea what the root cause is?

  • I know this is an old thread but routines triggered by Ring aren't working for me either.

  • Ring triggers on both my Ring devices, a Ring camera and a Ring doorbell, do not execute any action defined in SC.
My goal is to use the motion detection to switch a Hue light.

    It is a simple routine;
    Action: Hue light: On
    Trigger: Ring motion detected
Condition: All days of the week

Removed all other stuff like delays, timers, time periodes etc
Also reconnected Hue and Ring  +sync.

    Any suggestions?

  • Ring triggers do not work for me either. My workaround is to use a webhook with Ring/IFTT/SC. Ring motion triggers (via IFTT) a webhook that in turn triggers my light in SC.

A little roundabout but it works for what I want. And with the “timer” function in SC routines it turns itself back off automatically (e.g. after 10 min).

  • Raknudson, is this motion detected by a ring doorbell camera or Ring Alarm system?  When I go to IFTTT, all I see is connections for Ring Doorbell.  Not sure if they support Ring Alarm?

    1
  • My setup is using Ring Doorbell Pro. I do not have the Ring Alarm system. It would appear that you are correct... the IFTT applet only supports Ring Doorbell.

  • It is not working for me either.  Does no one from Simple Commands follow these links?  I see lots of people posting about the problem, but no reply since September 2019.

  • Eric,

I just got a response from Brian Walker today (see "General" thread) stating that the software is still supported.

I had created Ring device triggers in Simple Commands for Smarthings events, i.e. a ring motion sensor detects motion, which triggers Smarthings to turn on a light back in February.  The triggers  DID NOT work at first, then after a day or two, they started working.  These triggers were then working fine from 2/27/20 till about 5/1/20 then just stopped working.  In late June, early July, they suddenly started working again.  Hopefully Brian will have some insight into what is going on.

  • I set up a group of my ST (SmartThings) locks and created a routine to issue a lock command when Ring Alarm arms. There is no response when the alarm arms. If I execute the routine, it locks, but the whole point is to ensure the doors lock when Ring arms.

  • Alexa does not have this problem so it might be that simple command isn't fully connected to ring to receive its alerts.  I've notice that every time I click on any ring sensor in simple command it has to 'grab' that info from ring instead of 'already' knowing it.  I gues simply put its not fully integrated like Alexa is. I might have to revert back to Alexa...

  • Ring triggers on Android say may take 20min to execute! They do not work! Also, no Nest integration and on Android you get a login error trying to link your Hue account! It seems based on screen shots that this is quite different on IOS vs. Android. Also. Geo triggers do NOT work either. Its 11/08/20 and still no progress? This is not a moon mission going on here it just appears there is no internal support for this app. Shame too cuz it really could be something if all the things mentioned above actually worked!

  • Ring triggers on a Binary Switch do not execute any action defined in SC. Executing the routine manually works fine. But not the trigger. It worked once yesterday when I set it up but not since. I even tried deleting everything (even the Ring connection) and started over. No luck. Any ideas?

  • I'm having the same problem.

I have a triggers set for when Ring alarms, and a routine that turns on a binary switch.

We failed the fire department certification for Ring monitoring in October because the switch didn't turn on when the alarm went off. Manually executing the routine works.

Is there a way to make SC's access to the alarm status more reliable?

  • Andrew for some reason mine has been working since a few days after my November posting. I just verified and also I can see that my binary switch is turned off every time the alarm is disarmed (when I go in and out of the house). You may want to delete the routine and redo it. That helped me. Maybe Brian can figure out your issue

  • Thanks Oriol. It's not just about when the system is armed. It's specifically when the alarm is sounding. I will need to redo the routine, but that's not sufficient to rely on. Hopefully Brian jumps in.

  • Andrew. It works for me both on alarm sounding (when the system is armed and it's triggered) and then when it's disarmed. It does not work if you just set the alarm to sound (using the sound siren option for testing). Hope this helps.

  • Brian,

The routines appear to have stopped working. I created a new but doesn't work either. The command work if I trigger they themselves. Any help would be apporeciated

  • Same. Routines seem to be broken. At least for Ring. Controlling the devices themselves work fine.

  • My simple routine is to turn on a Kasa plug when Ring alarm is triggered.  I hooked a $9 outdoor siren to the Kasa plug.  This was working and now it stop.

  • Brian,

It seems that the routines stopped working again. Any specific reason. Even re-creating them still do not work, like in the past. Thanks.

  • Oriol and Brian...ditto

Since my last post in May 2020, I believe my routines ran fine except for some minor tweaks.   Then there was a power failure on July 17 and since then, routines are no longer working.  Deleted and replaced them all, no help.  Rebooted Ring and Smarthings...no help.

As I have stated before, I would be willing to pay for simplecommands service as it is highly useful, when it works...Not sure what the future of this software is, but I am going to have to start looking for alternatives..
